The benefits of drinking the fluoride in regular tap water for your dental health have been well publicised for decades. If after years of inadequate exposure to the fluoride in tap water you lose an adult tooth, you might not just be stuck with a $2000+ dental bill. Beyond your dental health, there are plenty more reasons to choose tap water. British researchers have found bottled variety is subject to far less stringent safety tests than tap water and is much more likely to be contaminated or become a source of infection

The study suggested that water from the tap is not healthier. They also reported that while tap water has to be checked daily under a rigorous inspection regime, by contrast, bottled makers are only required to undertake monthly testing at source.

Here in Australia, Choice magazine has made similar findings, quoting Stuart Khan, an associate professor of Civil and Environmental at UNSW; “Anyone in Australia that is under the impression that bottled water is safer than tap water is mistaken.

According to Khan, tap water needs to meet much more stringent quality criteria and is monitored far more carefully than bottled water.

BOTTLED SPRING WATER NEEDS TO BE TREATED

As for bottled water being completely pristine, Dr Peter Cox, principal advisor on public health at Sydney Water, says that even if you take the cleanest water out of a spring, microorganisms will change the water quality. "People like to believe bottled water is pure, straight from nature, with no human intervention, but it has to be treated.[1]"
